Jardim da Luz — São Paulo — Decay and Transformation

This work consists of 22 etchings printed from the same copper plate, which was repeatedly etched until its total destruction. The intermediate stages of the plate, which depicts the Jardim da Luz, were printed, resulting in continual images recording the transformation of the plate from an initial drawing via fragmentation to its disappearance.

Temperance Street — Manchester

Maria Valeria Bridge — Sturovo

Maria Valeria Bridge — linking Slovakia and Hungary — emerged as a theme during a four-month Bridgeguard Artists Residency in Sturovo, Slovakia, in 2005. Daily outdoor drawings, always from the same viewpoint, served as the basis of a studio investigation into the drawing process itself. The series relates to the act of observation and how this process can be contained within a drawing. This investigation has led to a number of installations of observational fragments.

The Boca do Lixo area of São Paulo was in the past the site of sex-shows, popular music venues, and bars. The paintings and prints in this series depict images from the clubs and cinemas of a bygone era. Most such establishments have been closed to make way for more profitable developments and gentrification.

The Miraculous Mandarin

The series consists of twenty-three large-scale drawings based on Bela Bartok’s ballet “The Miraculous Mandarin.” The 23 ink drawings on A1 paper mixed with collage techniques translate Bartok’s music and narrative into an independent visual language. Similar to the musical relationships within the score, the elements in each drawing are related to those in the other ones. The series was exhibited in 2004 at the Berlin Philharmonie in conjunction with the performance of “The Miraculous Mandarin,” conducted by Pierre Boulez.
